Updated and fully competitive in the class. introductiondodge grand caravan has been substantially revised for the 2011 model year, and we think the changes elevate this minivan on the consideration scale. The dodge grand caravan and chrysler town & country offer class-leading interior convenience.  the 2011 dodge grand caravan benefits from an extensive midcycle update. Changes for 2011 include revised styling, a new engine, an upgraded suspension, and a reworked interior.  for 2011, grand caravan has been repositioned to sell mostly below $30,000 while its chrysler counterpart, the town & country, is packaged to sell above $30,000. For the grand caravan, that means several features are no longer available, including sirius backseat tv, flotv, a power third-row seat, a dual-screen rear dvd entertainment system, and swivel 'n go seating with second-row seats that turn rearward to face a table that stows in the floor. However, the key features that make the grand caravan a compelling purchase as a people mover remain.  the new engine for 2011 is a 3. 6-liter v6 that replaces three archaic v6s from 2010, offering more power and improved fuel economy. The new engine fixes a weak point and makes the dodge competitive with the toyota sienna and honda odyssey. This fine new 3. 6-liter v6 is mated to a mediocre 6-speed automatic transmission, resulting in a combination that delivers adequate response for most drivers.  the 2011 grand caravan suspension is stiffer than before and the van rides lower, making it more responsive to driver inputs than the 2010 model. Gone are the annoying wallow and float characteristics we noted with the 2010 model. Yet ride quality is still quite smooth. Like all modern minivans, the grand caravan is big, so it can be a beast to handle in tight quarters. Grand caravan, sienna, and odyssey are all the same size: extra large. Indeed, we should call these vehicles midi-vans or vans because there is nothing mini about them.  for 2011, the interior of the grand caravan is upgraded, and we find the new look far more attractive. The materials are richer, though, like most of its rivals, hard plastic dominates the dashboard. Still, the new soft-touch door tops, redesigned gauges and nice bits of trim are welcome.  grand caravan is about usable space. Super stow 'n go is standard. The third-row seats fold into the well behind them, and with all the seats down the grand caravan can accept a 4x8 sheet of plywood.  the grand caravan's unique cargo and entertainment features make it a strong contender in the minivan class, and the 2011 changes only make it better. Families will like it, especially because those entertainment features will make for more enjoyable family trips. That is, after all, the reason the grand caravan remains so popular. While some options are gone, there are plenty of entertainment features that will help keep the kids occupied. They include three types of hard-drive radio, sirius satellite radio, rear dvd entertainment, a wireless cell phone link, and a mobile internet hot spot. Its designers focused on interior creature comforts, such as the popular stow 'n go seating system. Stow 'n go consists of bins in the floor behind the first row of seats, and second-row seats that can be folded into those bins, resulting in a flat load floor for easily carrying larger objects. Options include a rearview camera, rear park assist, rear cross path and blind spot alert. All-wheel drive is not available. walkaroundthe dodge grand caravan is attractive, as minivans go. The look is less boxy for 2011, as dodge has softened the lines a bit while adding a touch of sportiness.  for starters, the 2011 grand caravan sits an inch lower than before. Up front, it has a sportier fascia with mesh inserts, a revised version of the dodge crosshair grille, a slightly reshaped hood and quad headlights. At the rear, the liftgate is slightly modified to accept new dodge lettering, there is a body color roof spoiler, the fascia is new, there a step plate with chrome trim, and the taillights add leds. Sixteen-inch wheels are standard. We think the available five-spoke 17-inch alloy wheels look better.  a minivan shape does not lend itself to artistic sculpture. A description of the overall shape of this current generation of the dodge grand caravan wouldn't sound too much different from a description of the 1982 model. There is a big box behind, where all the people and cargo fit, and a smaller box in front, for the engine. That very efficient outline defines every minivan on the road.  all the leading minivans, including toyota sienna, honda odyssey, and chrysler town & country, are within an inch or two of the grand caravan in overall dimensions. The grand caravan has a 202. 8-inch overall length and a 121. 2-inch wheelbase.  these so-called minivans are quite large. However, they share their basic architecture with cars, using unit-body structures and front-wheel-drive platforms, with the engine mounted transversely. Conversely, full-size vans, such as the chevrolet express, are built on truck platforms, with body-on-frame structures, rear-wheel-drive platforms and giant, longitudinally mounted v8 engines. Minivans are lighter, more fuel-efficient and offer more responsive handling than the full-size vans. interiorthe 2011 grand caravan gets a new interior design, and it's a considerable upgrade versus the 2010 model. The dashboard is still hard plastic, but that's the norm for the class. The look and feel is much better, with a more flowing, one-piece design. The door tops are now padded, adding a touch of comfort, and the cloth and leather upholstery are upgraded. We liked the stain-resistant cloth seats on last year's models, but the cloth seats on the 2011 models look quite good as well.  up front, the instrumentation is changed for 2011, with bigger black dials offset by blue-tinted graphics and chrome trim. The shift lever sticks out just to the left of the center stack, an efficient location.  the steering wheel is new on the 2011 model.

While the g6 doesn't offer the refinement or attention to detail of its japanese rivals, it's an alternative worth considering for shoppers in the mid-size car market. (the g6 replaces the grand am, which has been discontinued.)  the g6 sedan line has been expanded for 2006 as well, with multiple engine and trim levels available. We found the g6 has good road manners even when driven hard, benefits of its long wheelbase and european-designed architecture. The sedan is roomy and plush with excellent overall function and its price point has made it a popular choice as a mid-size sedan. A panoramic roof is available on sedans, with panels that slide rearward creating a sunroof large enough for the back seat riders to enjoy an open-air experience. The gt models come standard with the v6, abs, and 17-inch wheels and tires. A manual six-speed wide-ratio transaxle is optional on gtp sedan and coupe models.  options include xm satellite radio 325), a standard-sized sunroof 800), remote starting 190), and chrome-finish 17-inch wheels 700). Various options packages are available, including a leather package for the gt and gtp 1,365). Basic traction assist is available on the base model, full-spectrum traction control on the gt, and traction control with the gm/delphi stabilitrak chassis control system will be available on the gtp. Onstar 695) is an excellent safety feature for its ability to summon help. We recommend opting for all this stuff. Head injuries are the leading cause of fatalities in side impacts. walkaroundwhen the g6 was introduced, pontiac was quick to point out that all of its future cars would incorporate cues from the g6, that it was the living expression of what all future pontiacs will look like and act like. So far, this has been true, with new pontiacs like the torrent reflecting the g6's clean, uncluttered styling.  gone are the massive side-cladding panels and standoff rear spoiler associated with pontiac. Instead, there is a single spear running down the sides of the g6 with an optional delicately integrated spoiler lip on the trailing edge of the decklid. Gtp models look similar to the gt, but with a standard spoiler chrome exhaust tips. The base version has almost no decoration at all, and is even a bit soulless in style when compared to the previous high-energy, hot-looking grand am, even duller than the honda accord.  the new 2006 coupe and convertible inject a little more excitement into the styling. The two share the same sleek profile, although the roof on the coupe looks much better integrated (for obvious reasons). The frameless windows are indexed, meaning that they automatically open 0. 25 inch when the doors are opened, and close again when the door is closed for a tight seal. From the rear, both cars feature narrow taillights and a sloping decklid that looks similar to the toyota solara coupe and convertible. We think it's an improvement over the blander styling of the sedan.  the pontiac g6 is built in michigan on gm's international epsilon platform, from parts and ideas used on the saab 9-3, opel vectra, chevrolet malibu sedan and malibu maxx wagonette, all introduced over the past two years.  all g6 models use the long wheelbase version of the epsilon platform (like the malibu maxx), which gives them ride and handling finesse, with a structural stiffness that helps the g6 achieve a 27. 3 hz bending frequency, a big number that ranks with most luxury cars. Pontiac says the car is designed with three major torque rings that add stiffness and strength without taking up too much space or adding weight. In addition to the torque rings, the g6 structure also uses high-strength steel for about 60 percent of underbody components and central tunnel. Rather than just a single layer of sheet steel, the tunnel has an extra piece of steel welded between it and the floor pan. The stiff body uses fully isolated front and rear subframes to carry the heavy stuff, and the front one is hydroformed for strength and light weight. These measures can be experienced in the smooth ride and sharp handling of the g6. interiorthe g6 interior is altogether different from the somewhat excitable, frenetic soft-plastic, fat-knob theme of the old grand ams. It is much darker, more modern, more european.  the sporty front bucket seats are made for body comfort and body retention in high-speed maneuvers, and they are very comfortable and thickly padded.  rear-seat space benefits from the relatively long wheelbase of 112. 3 inches. In the sedan, a 6-foot, 4-inch passenger can sit behind a 6-foot, 4-inch driver with plenty of room. Those with tall friends or family may want to remember that the panoramic sunroof is powered by a motor that takes up a big chunk of headroom at the trailing edge of the sedan's headliner. Instruments and controls are presented in white on black (red at night). Every single knob and escutcheon has a chrome ring around it. Very tastful, and nicely presented, with small, conservative graphics on the faces and labels. It's remarkable how easily it works, and keeps conversation possible even at very high road speeds. It's an interesting feature and we recommend it.  the two-door convertible's top was engineered with karmann, which specializes in convertibles. The big top opens and closes within 30 seconds, storing under the truck lid and a hard tonneau cover when open.  the trunk is still accessible when the top is down, but space is reduced from a tiny 5. 8 cubic feet to a grocery-bag sized 1. 8 cubic feet. We found the sedan and coupe reasonably quiet around town. A few powertrain and road noises slipped in here and there, and there was some wind noise from the sharp-cornered mirror bodies. The ride is comfortable and smooth and the car tracks well. The more powerful gtp delivers more sprightly performance. On april 17, 1964, the first mustang rolled onto the streets. Performance and style were its hallmarks and folks loved its long hood, short rear deck, and low profile.  anticipating next year’s milestone, every 2004 mustang will have 40th anniversary badges on the front fenders. They also get special exterior and interior upgrades. Wind noise has been reduced on 2004 models through the use of improved sealing, and both the v6 and v8 engines benefit from some minor refinements.  after all these years, the mustang still represents affordable performance and style. A base coupe, for example, retails for just $17,720 and cash incentives can knock a big chunk off of that. Mustang convertibles are popular and attractively priced.  mustang gt models are a hoot to drive with their 260-horsepower v8 engines. Just don't expect sophisticated ride and handling. The mach 1 returns for 2004, boasting a 310-horsepower twin-cam v8, a sports suspension, and a shaker hood designed to remind us of the famous 1969 fastback. Production of the 2004 mach 1 will be limited, however.  an all-new 2005 ford mustang is expected to go on sale in mid-2004. lineupbase models come with a v6 engine. High-performance gt models are powered by a v8. Each is available in coupe and convertible body styles. Convertibles feature a power top with a scratch-resistant glass rear window. A black semi-hard boot protects the top and gives the mustang a clean look with the top down.  every 2004 mustang will have 40th anniversary badges on the front fenders. To manage all that power, gt models are equipped with gas-pressure shocks with unique model calibrations, p245/45r17 performance tires on 17-inch alloy painted wheels, a traction loc rear axle, abs and traction control. Gts come with sport bucket seats and fog lamps. The v8 mates with a tremec five-speed manual gearbox with a tall fifth gear for improved fuel economy. Mach 1 gets a sports suspension (stiffer springs, special shocks and struts, lower ride height). Distinguished by its black shaker hood, the mach 1 5,575) is treated as a package. It also comes with special 17-inch wheels, special leather-trimmed seats, special interior trim, in-dash six-disc cd stereo, and special exterior graphics.  the cobra is powered by the supercharged svt 4. 6-liter v8 from ford's special vehicle team. The svt v8 produces 390 horsepower at 6000 rpm, with 390 pounds-feet of torque at 3500 rpm. It comes mated to a six-speed manual gearbox. Cobra comes shod with p275/40r17 tires and loaded with special interior and exterior trim.  standard safety equipment includes safety belts with pretensioners to tighten the lap belt and shoulder belts in the first moments of a crash. Energy-management retractors gradually slacken the safety belt if necessary to help reduce the force of the belt on the occupant's chest. The rear fender air intake, for example, has sharp corners and pronounced lines; but the rocker panels curve out, and the fenders have pronounced front and rear wheel well arches. The front end features wraparound complex reflector headlamps with integrated side marker lamps, combined with a square-edged honeycomb grille and a chrome pony. Tricolor front fender badges recall the good old days, as does the prominent but non-functional hood scoop. In back, it's 1965 with vertical, three-element taillamps.  gt models get unique hood and side-scoop treatments, along with fog lights and a rear spoiler.  mach 1 is easy to spot with special trim that starts with its shaker hood scoop. Attached directly to the top of the engine, the black scoop rears its head through a squarish hole in the mach 1 hood. (hood scoops on gt models sit on top of the hood.) a bold low-gloss black stripe runs up the center of the powerdome hood to accentuate the scoop. In theory, the scoop is designed to channel fresh air into the intake for increased breathing and, therefore, increased power.  the 40th anniversary package, a no-cost option for 2004 mustangs, is distinguished by arizona beige metallic performance stripes on the hood, lower rocker panels and deck lid. Arizona beige metallic accents upgraded wheels (16-inch for the v-6 and 17-inch bullitt wheels for the gt). The 40th anniversary models are available in an exclusive crimson red exterior, as well as black and oxford white, with body-colored, fold-in side mirrors. interiorthe mustang cockpit is a little quieter for 2004. New expandable foam seals designed to reduce wind noise are used around the body, particularly the outside door handles and belt moldings on both doors.  convertibles and coupes offer about the same amount of room in the front seats. Either way, it's a cozy interior. There's enough seat-track length to accommodate tall drivers and just enough elbowroom to keep from feeling cramped. Seatbelts are attached to the seat frames so they move with the seats. The package includes unique floor mats with an embroidered 40th anniversary logo and a matching badge on the center console.  the mach 1 tachometer and speedometer use a tall condensed typeface and more hash marks that make it harder to read than the gauges in the gt models. The instrument panel, center console and headliner are color-keyed. To turn on the headlights, pull out an old-fashioned knob on the left. The center console includes cup holders.  svt cobra models offer front bucket seats with nudo leather trim and suede inserts. The driver's seat features six-way power with power-adjustable thigh and side bolsters, and power lumbar support. Clearly, these seats are made for serious, fast driving. Switches are on the right-front corner of the seat. The svt instrument cluster has been redesigned to include a boost gauge. The gauges feature titanium-colored faces and electroluminescent lighting. The cobra's gearshift knob is leather-wrapped, with a brushed-aluminum insert on the top, inscribed with the six-speed pattern. Metal-trimmed pedals and dead pedal are standard.  the back seat is small, with only enough room for small objects or kids. Convertibles have even less hip and shoulder room than coupes, but about the same headroom and legroom.  the trunk is small with an even smaller opening. Coupes hold just under 11 cubic feet worth of cargo, while convertibles hold just 7. 7 cubic feet. A split fold-down rear seat is standard and handy for hauling cargo. driving impressiondriving the ford mustang confirms it is a throwback to another era. A mustang gt has more than enough power to break the rear wheels loose. The firm suspension transmitted freeway undulations, and there is some side-to-side jouncing on rough surfaces, but this car makes us feel happy.  the engine sounds so good, so deep and thunderous, it might be the most enjoyable thing about the car.
